A Backyard Wedding

I had the pleasure of designing the personal flowers for a lovely backyard wedding outside of Franklin. It was a beautiful day, with perfectly blue skies, emerald green grass, and a lovely bride and groom ready to commit themselves to one another for eternity-- the perfect wedding day.

The colors of the wedding were ivory, cream, and a brilliant red. For the bouts, I constructed a calla lily with a solitary stephanotis bloom calla lily bout

The brides and bridesmaids bouquets featured vendela roses, black magic roses, cream freesia, and white lilac

Coolest of the Cool Finds: Paperwink and Made by Julene

Dropping in to blog to share some super awesome finds on the interwebs. First off, The Paperwink-- I originally heard about this fab place on my fave blog, Green Wedding Shoes, and I had to check it out-- so I ordered a nice little ink stamp. It's super great, high quality, and the quickest turnaround you can imagine. I highly recommend having a stamper to make those return label addresses easy, pretty, and unique when you're sending out the loads of correspondence before & after the wedding. They have the greatest stamps, coordinated stationery items, and the neatest "branded experience" items for your wedding. To share a few favorites:

The Branch pattern stamp:

which you can coordinate with colored calling cards & notecards:

I love the "Lace" Branded experience for a wedding:

Definitely, you can see by the above that Paperwink is a must-check out resource.

Second cool find: Made by Julene. A paper crafting Goddess, Julene makes the most amazing creations in paper. I am about to order something, I just don't know what, because I have so many inspired ideas after checking out her too-wonderful creations. A few favorites:

I carry your heart
Awww, the sentiment is sweet.

Love is Sweet
Agreed, it is nice to have bread... :D and love!

This one is too cool, a portrait of a bride & groom:

I think that's suitable proof of the coolness that is Made by Julene's awesome papercuts. To get yours, learn more by visiting her site

Sugar, Sugar

A few months ago, I constructed a beautiful dessert table for the Sugar is Art gallery held at the ever so gorgeous Cannery Ballroom My inspiration: all things spring.

I started with a color scheme: i wanted a rich buttery yellow and shades of orange & brown along with spotches of bright spring colors: greens, blues, oranges. For my linens, I went to Hancock  Fabric and bought bolts of fabric: lemony-yellow satin and a "brocade" overlay. I decided that I wanted to incorporate a springy-bird theme to tie in with all of my candies, and since Easter was right around the corner, I knew I could find a lot of fun spring and bird-inspired decor.

On the hunt for the perfect blossom

There's always a bride that wants a bloom that is impossible to procure during their marital month-- an oft cited one being the peony, a bloom that is its most impressive during the month of May before saying adieu in early June. While other countries produce the peony, it's the Dutch peony in highest demand, and of course those of the local variety that you may be able to find.

My favorite flower is, hands down, the yellow tree peony: an impressively large and fragrant bloom that is a sunshiny lemon yellow with a delightful center that is a bit orange & a touch maroon-- it's a flower I'd cross a desert barefooted for, but hey, I'm a real sucker for flowers.

Yellow tree peony
The glorious yellow tree peony

May is one of those months where the world is in full bloom-- gorgeous rannunculus, Bearded & Dutch iris, snapdragon, delphinium, tulips, and garden roses are all available and blooming. Seasonal herbs, like flowering basil, brisk and delicious mint, and luscious rosemary also make an appearance. At the close of the month, the early Dahlia and Sunflower are breathtakingly beautiful.

Saponaria
The Saponaria is another awesome spring bloom

There are certain flowers with such popularity that at any given time they are available somewhere in the world, like hydrangea (though May and June mark months with the most stunningly unique and beautiful colors, from brilliant blues to Emerald Greens), roses, assorted mums, and the ever- lovely Gerbera daisy. In the hotter months, these become more fragile as a result of shipping: most of the things a bride looks for are those beyond her backyard, and they come from various parts around the globe, from Holland to Miami.

When a bride is planning, you stumble upon gorgeous gems of flowers in magazines, blogsites, and web archives devoted to tickling your fancy and expanding your floral horizon. The past few months have been really rannunculus and peony heavy, mostly because these blooms are at their height and so very gorgeous-- the sad thing is that come late June, they'll be long gone, and won't reappear until next year.

A stunning photo from the Knot shows off a bouquet comprised soley of white and green centered rannunculas:

Rannunculus bouquet
When planning your flowers, talk with your floral designer about what is in season and what's available for your date. You can save yourself time and possible heartache by already having a good idea of what is available at your time of year and location, and what you can realistically expect. Out of season flowers can be ither impossible to locate or extremely expensive, which may make them outside the realm of possibilty.

When you love a flower but can't foot the bill or can't find it, be flexible about substitutions that can achieve a similar look to the bouquet of your dreams, or consider a high quality artificial bloom that can pull off the look.

If you absolutely love what you love, no exceptions, plan your wedding in the months that everything you want is available-- like if you love Peonys, tulips, and rannunculus, then you are a spring bride all the way.

Jamie & Chris...it's love!

This February, I had a gorgeous wedding with planner extraordinaire Kristin Carolan of Simply Stunning Events, and the oh-so-talented photographer Brian Kaplan. The theme: rustic glam meets modern contemporary. The colors: jewel tones of deep rich red, lucious purple, sage green, gold, and oranges, with a pop of brilliant reds and vivid green. The result: a gorgeous wedding for an equally gorgeous bride & groom.

All pics courtesy of Brian Kaplan Photography.

The bride and her bouquet
The bouquet featured white mini callas, bicolored coffee break & leonidas roses, vendela roses, and seeded eucalyptus

red hypericum & waxflower acted as a bit of embellishment, and the bouquet handle was dressed in antique gold midori

The cake was embellished with open black magic roses & coffee break roses

The bridesmaids bouquets were a vignette of colors, with deep black magics (they were so open and gorgeous!), white callas, coffee break roses, and mango callas-- and then wrapped with chocolate midori

 tulips, anthurium, and leves
The  reception tables were 42 inches. We created small, focal-point conversation-style pieces: This arrangement features a leaf wrapped vase with red anthurium, fern curls, dendrobium orchids and roses.

Country Music Marathon Day-- and a gift basket

Today is the Country Music Marathon where over 30,000 runners are jogging it out in the full or half marathon-- what a feat! Along the route, bands play music for the spectators, and Nashville is filled with locals and out of towners that have come to run this fabulous race.

One of these runners is a Team in Training Member that has raised a lot of money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. She deserves mention for two reasons-- one, her selfless devotion to such a wonderful cause, and secondly that her good friends in Texas called to have us design a special gift basket to await her in her room after the big run.

The basket was tucked with lots of foot-loving remedies and some Nashville keepsakes. We tucked in comfy and fuzzy leopard print sandals (because we hope she ran super fast) some luxury foot soak & lotion, a specially-formulated bath soak for sore muscles that's all natural & organic, a fluffy bath scrubby, some organic cucumber eye soothers, and a first aid kit inside a hand-painted basket with music notes & a few inspirational messages. We included some soothing aloe foot socks for extra repair, a pumice stone for long after the race is through, and made her a pair of fun flip flops to wear post-race embellished with spring flowers & ribbon. To savor her trip to Nashville, we included some Nashville originals-- RC cola, a mixed bag of nuts from the peanut shop, a Nashville Guidebook, and a disposable camera to capture the moments.

We hope the race was a success for ALL the runners!
